The ney is an end-blown flute that holds a significant position in Middle Eastern music. In several musical traditions from the region, it stands as the sole wind instrument utilized. Remarkably, the ney has been a continuous part of musical expression for 4,500–5,000 years, establishing itself as one of the oldest musical instruments still actively employed.

The Turkish ney boasts six finger-holes on its front side and features a high-set thumb-hole on its rear side. Noteworthy is the off-centered placement of the thumb hole, angled either left or right to cater to individuals performing with a particular hand positioned on top.

Distinctively, the Turkish ney represents an end-blown reed flute and emerges as an Ottoman iteration inspired by the ancient ney. Alongside the Turkish tanbur lute and the Turkish kemençe fiddle, it holds recognition as key instruments in Classical Turkish music. Furthermore, the ney assumes a pivotal role in Mevlevi Sufi rites (semâ) musical practices.
